How to Be an Active Dad Without Sacrificing Your Own Passions

You used to have hobbies—remember those? Football, music, cycling, gaming, woodworking… whatever it was that made you feel like you. Then kids came along, and suddenly, your free time was replaced by snack-fetching, refereeing sibling wars, and wondering if you’ll ever finish a coffee while it’s still hot. But here’s the thing: being a great dad doesn’t mean giving up the things you love. In fact, holding onto them might just make you better at this whole dadhood thing.

  2. Get the Kids Involved – Love music? Teach them a few chords. Into running? Let them bike alongside you. You keep your passion, and they get quality time.

  3. Put It in the Calendar – If it’s not scheduled, it won’t happen. Block out time just like you would a work meeting.

  4. Trade Time with Your Partner – They get a break, you get a break—everyone wins.

  5. Drop the Guilt – Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish. A happier, more fulfilled dad is a better dad.


Your life didn’t stop when you became a dad. You’re still you—and keeping your passions alive doesn’t take away from fatherhood, it makes it stronger.
